Tempests (HUM455)

I’m trying to obtain a copy of the most recent film adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, directed by Julie Taymor:

There are a number of versions of the play, from Peter Greenaway’s “naked Tempest” starring a (clothed) John Gielgud to Derek Jarman’s “gay Tempest” to Fred Wilcox’s science fiction extravaganza Forbidden Planet:

In 1998, Peter Fonda starred in a production transposed to the Civil War era South. As with so many Hollywood films, the South is depicted as a gothic space, haunted by superstition and ruled by obscure forces. I haven’t seen this film yet, but it looks like we could call it the “hoo-doo Tempest”:

Unfortunately, there has never been a film version of Aime Cesaire‘s anti-colonialist adaptation, A Tempest, a play that foregrounds the character of Caliban.
